High-Stakes Parliament Session as Women’s Quota and Delimitation Bills Are Tabled

The central government is set to introduce crucial legislation in Parliament today, including the bill to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, along with a delimitation bill that could redraw India’s electoral map.

The women’s reservation bill seeks to guarantee one-third representation for women, but its implementation is tied to a nationwide delimitation exercise based on Census data. The government is aiming to roll out the quota before the 2029 general elections.

Two of the proposed bills require Constitutional amendments, meaning they must secure a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament. The ruling NDA currently falls short of this mark, making support from opposition parties essential.

While opposition parties broadly support women’s reservation, they have raised strong objections to linking it with delimitation. Concerns have been voiced that the exercise could alter the balance of political representation, particularly affecting southern states.

The delimitation process is also expected to significantly increase the strength of the Lok Sabha to over 800 seats, alongside changes in representation for Union Territories.

With sharp differences between the government and the opposition, the introduction of these bills is likely to spark intense debate and a political showdown in Parliament.
