Jamuria / Asansol: Tension erupted in the industrial belt of Jamuria in Asansol, West Burdwan district, after a worker died in an accident at a private factory in the Sheikhpur area.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning during work hours. The deceased worker has been identified as Keshab Bauri (36), a resident of Churulia under Jamuria police station. Following the accident, his colleagues accused the factory management of negligence in maintaining safety standards.
The workers alleged that the accident could have been avoided if proper safety gear and precautions had been provided.
As news of the death spread, factory workers and members of local labour unions gathered at the main gate of the factory, staging a protest demanding compensation and financial assistance for the deceased worker’s family. The situation soon turned tense inside the factory premises.
Police from Jamuria police station reached the spot and held talks with the protesters to bring the situation under control. The tension subsided after the workers were assured that their demands would be considered.
Factory workers Mithun Badyakar and Mohammad Afzal said, “Keshab Bauri was working inside the factory in the morning when a chain block slipped, causing him to fall from the platform and die on the spot. There are no proper safety measures in this factory—no ambulance, no safety equipment. We demand immediate safety arrangements for all workers and adequate compensation for Keshab’s family.”
Police said that the deceased worker’s body was sent for post-mortem examination at Asansol District Hospital. However, no response has yet been received from the factory management regarding the incident or the workers’ allegations.
