Fresh fighting broke out along the Thailand–Cambodia border early Monday, leaving one Thai soldier dead and several others injured. The clash occurred in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province, a region that has witnessed repeated tensions due to long-standing territorial disputes.
The Thai military stated that Cambodian troops opened fire first, triggering an exchange that resulted in the fatality and injuries to four Thai soldiers. Cambodia strongly rejected this claim, accusing Thai forces of crossing into Cambodian territory and initiating the attack. Its defence ministry said Cambodian troops responded only after being provoked.
This incident adds to a series of violent flare-ups reported this year along the poorly demarcated frontier. Previous clashes involved heavy weapons, causing casualties on both sides and forcing civilians in nearby villages to flee.
Analysts warn that continued hostilities risk undermining earlier ceasefire understandings and could push the situation toward a larger conflict. Both nations are under growing pressure from regional observers to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation.
