A total of 5,17,040 Waqf properties have been registered on the Centre’s dedicated ‘UMID’ portal, of which more than two lakh have already received approval. The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs released the updated data on Monday. Several applications were also rejected after verification.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had observed that registering Waqf properties on a centralised portal would be beneficial. In response, the government launched the ‘UMID’ portal on 6 June, allotting a six-month window for registration. The final deadline was 6 December, which Minister Kiren Rijiju had recently reiterated, adding that no extension would be granted.
According to the ministry, of the total registrations, 2,16,905 properties have been approved. Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest number of registrations (92,830 — 86,345 Sunni and 6,485 Shia), followed by Maharashtra (62,939), Karnataka (58,328) and West Bengal (23,086).
As per the data, 2,13,941 registered properties are still awaiting approval, while 10,869 applications were rejected during verification.
The Centre stated that to facilitate the process, continuous training sessions and workshops were conducted across states and Union Territories. Technical teams and administrators also held seven regional meetings and operated a dedicated helpline.
The amended Waqf Bill was earlier passed by both Houses of Parliament — 288 votes in favour and 232 against in Lok Sabha, and 128 in favour and 95 against in Rajya Sabha. After receiving Presidential assent on 5 April, it became law. The matter subsequently reached the Supreme Court. While the court upheld the law as constitutional, it raised objections to two specific provisions:
- allowing district magistrates to decide whether a property is Waqf or government-owned — a decision the court said should rest with the judiciary;
- requiring donors to prove they practised Islam for at least five years — a clause not supported by any implementation rules.
Both provisions have been kept in abeyance.
