Burnpur, West Bengal: In a major step towards strengthening operational efficiency, safety, and infrastructure, the Burnpur Steel Plant of SAIL-ISP (IISCO Steel Plant) inaugurated four new facilities and equipment at its Operation Garage on Thursday.
The inauguration was carried out by Surajit Mishra, Director-in-Charge of ISP, in the presence of Dipendu Ghosh (ED, Works), Arup Mukhopadhyay (ED, Finance & Accounts), Praveen Kumar (CGM-in-Charge, Projects), along with senior officials and employees of the Operation Garage.
Key Facilities Commissioned
- A revamped TML de-bricking machine
- Three mini excavators
- Five off-road Haulpak dumpers equipped with 360° surround view monitoring system
- A newly constructed 4,000 sq. m. parking area near the Universal Section Mill (USM) with capacity for 40–45 trailers.
The TML de-bricking machine, originally procured from a German company in 2010 under a modernization package, has been completely rebuilt at a cost of nearly ₹60 lakh. The overhaul included replacement of wiring harness, updated software and interface, upgraded safety features, and internal improvements in boom guide rollers and outrigger pads. The revamp significantly extends its service life and efficiency for clearing converter mouth jams and process-related tasks.
The three compact mini excavators feature a bucket capacity of 0.07 m³, an operating weight of 2,300 kg, and an engine power of 27.4 HP. These are designed for cleaning, maintenance, and operations in confined areas such as conveyors, tunnels, pits, and drains. The equipment was procured through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) tender process at a total cost of ₹62.95 lakh (₹20.98 lakh per unit).
The Haulpak dumpers have been fitted with advanced 360° surround view monitoring systems with front, rear, left, and right cameras. The live feed displayed on the dashboard eliminates blind spots, enhances safe reversing and steering, and helps prevent accidents. Each system cost ₹4.73 lakh, bringing the total expenditure for five units to ₹23.65 lakh. The system also has a recording feature to strengthen safety and operational monitoring.
The 4,000 sq. m. parking area, developed in-house by the Operations Garage, can accommodate up to 45 trailers simultaneously. This facility has eased road dispatch operations and improved traffic safety within the plant premises.
Commitment to Modernization and Safety
Speaking on the occasion, Vineet Rawal, Chief General Manager (Mechanical Maintenance), said the inauguration of these facilities reflects ISP’s ongoing commitment to modernization, enhanced safety, and efficient use of resources. He also appreciated the innovative in-house efforts of the Operation Garage team.
