A distinct transitional phase in weather conditions is expected to begin across West Bengal from wednesday, marking the onset of the monsoon withdrawal process. Meteorologists describe this period as a climatic tug-of-war between retreating monsoon winds and advancing northwesterly dry winds — a phase that can jokingly be referred to as the “Withdrawal Symptom.”
The Onset of Change
After months of dominance by the moist southwesterly monsoon winds, the atmospheric setup is gradually shifting. Residents across several parts of South Bengal have already started sensing the change — a slight tightening of the skin, a mild chill in the air, and the first hints of northwesterly breeze. These subtle signs point to the beginning of monsoon retreat.
The Atmospheric Battle
According to the analysis, this transition does not happen quietly. The receding southerly winds resist displacement by the incoming dry air from the northwest, resulting in unstable atmospheric conditions. This clash between the two air masses often manifests as afternoon thunderstorms, lightning, and brief spells of rain.
This meteorological “battle” is expected to continue from October 8 to around October 12 or 13, with sporadic thunderstorm activity mostly during late afternoons or evenings. However, not all regions will experience this every day — localized instability will determine where the storms occur.
South Bengal: Mixed Weather Ahead
For South Bengal, the coming week will be characterized by sunny mornings and partly cloudy afternoons, with chances of isolated thundershowers, particularly between October 8 and 13. Monsoon withdrawal from the region is likely by around October 15, after which temperatures will begin to drop and cooler northwesterly winds will dominate.
North Bengal: Rapid Transition to Dry Conditions
North Bengal, on the other hand, will experience a quicker shift. Light rainfall may occur over the next couple of days, but the region is expected to turn completely dry by October 12, signaling a full retreat of the monsoon system.
The Coming of Autumn
Once the northwesterly winds firmly establish themselves over the region, Bengal will move decisively into the post-monsoon phase — characterized by clear skies, lower humidity, and a gentle nip in the air, marking the official arrival of autumn across the state.
