IndiGo and Akasa Air will begin operations from the newly built Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) starting December 25, marking the start of commercial flights from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s second airport.
IndiGo said it will launch domestic services to 10 cities from NMIA, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, North Goa (Mopa), Jaipur, Nagpur, Cochin, and Mangalore. The airline added that it plans to expand operations from the new airport over time. NMIA has been designed to complement the existing Mumbai International Airport and meet the rising air travel demand in the region.
IndiGo currently operates more than 2,300 daily flights to over 130 destinations and, as of November 14, had a fleet of 409 aircraft.
Akasa Air also announced that it will start flights from NMIA in phases beginning December 25. Its first service will operate on the Delhi–Navi Mumbai route, followed by flights to Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad. The airline plans to scale up to 300 domestic and 50 international weekly departures from the airport over time.
Akasa said NMIA will strengthen its presence in western India and support future international expansion, especially into Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8. Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, the airport covers 1,160 hectares and includes one terminal and one runway, with an annual handling capacity of 20 million passengers in its initial phase.
