India’s Rice Exports Rise Sharply, Bangladesh Emerges as Key Buyer despite tensions

India’s rice exports have surged close to a record level in 2025, with neighbouring Bangladesh emerging as one of the most significant beneficiaries of the increase. The rise follows the lifting of export restrictions, which allowed Indian rice to re-enter global markets in large volumes.

Officials and trade sources say shipments from India have grown steadily over the past year, driven by strong production and competitive prices. Among the destinations, Bangladesh has seen a notable rise in imports of Indian rice, particularly non-basmati varieties used for daily consumption.

Bangladesh has been facing pressure on domestic rice supplies due to crop losses and rising demand. As a result, it has increasingly turned to India for quick and affordable imports. Indian rice, priced lower than supplies from other exporting nations, has helped Bangladesh stabilise its market and control food inflation.

Trade analysts point out that despite occasional political and diplomatic strains between the two neighbours, rice trade has continued smoothly. India’s ability to supply large quantities at short notice has reinforced its importance as Bangladesh’s most reliable source of rice imports.

With export curbs relaxed and stocks remaining comfortable, India is expected to continue supplying rice to Bangladesh in the coming months. The trend highlights India’s growing influence in regional food security and Bangladesh’s dependence on Indian grain to meet its domestic needs.
