Iconic Kolkata Buildings Turn Blue on World Children’s Day to Highlight Child Rights

Kolkata: Several landmark Kolkata buildings, including the Bidhan Sabha Bhavan and the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were illuminated in blue on Thursday to mark World Children’s Day and reaffirm commitment to child rights.

The Kolkata Press Club and the UNICEF state office also joined the initiative, lighting up their premises in solidarity with children’s rights and aspirations.

UNICEF said the celebrations this year centre on two themes — “My Day. My Rights”, highlighting the rights children seek for themselves, and “The Child in Me. My Promise to Children”, encouraging adults to reconnect with childhood and renew their commitment to young people.

“The illumination is aimed at building awareness about creating a world of peace, opportunity, equality, dignity and safety for every child,” said Dr. Monjur Hossain, UNICEF’s Chief in West Bengal. He added that the initiative is intended to inspire society to uphold children’s rights and help them realise their full potential.

To mark the day, UNICEF West Bengal also convened a meeting with several civil society organisations to strengthen collaborative efforts for child welfare. The forum aims to share best practices, enhance skills, and foster cooperation among groups working to secure a better future for children.
