Two suspected cases of Nipah virus infection have been reported in West Bengal, triggering heightened alert among health authorities. The patients, both nurses from a private hospital in North 24 Parganas, were admitted after developing severe symptoms and are currently in critical condition. They have been kept in isolation and are on ventilator support.
State officials said that samples from both patients have been sent to specialised laboratories outside the state for confirmatory testing. Until the final reports arrive, the cases are being treated as suspected Nipah infections, and all necessary precautionary measures have been put in place.
The state health department has initiated contact tracing to identify and monitor people who may have come into close contact with the patients. Hospitals across the region have been advised to follow strict infection control protocols and remain prepared for any escalation.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reviewed the situation and instructed officials to ensure that there is no panic while maintaining maximum vigilance. Helpline numbers have been activated to address public concerns and provide information.
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease known for its high mortality rate and potential for human-to-human transmission. Health authorities have urged the public to stay alert, practice hygiene measures, and rely only on official updates as the situation continues to be closely monitored.
