Cold Spell continues Across Bengal, Cooch Behar Coldest in Plains

West Bengal remained in the grip of a stable and persistent winter pattern on Wednesday, as temperatures continued to hover at low levels across the state. Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than earlier in the week but still much colder than normal for this time of year. The city’s coldest day of the season so far occurred last week, when the minimum temperature had dipped to 14.5 degrees Celsius.

In the plains, Cooch Behar was the coldest spot on Wednesday, registering 9.9 degrees Celsius. The hill town of Darjeeling remained extremely chilly at 5.4 degrees Celsius. In South Bengal, Bolpur reported 11.4 degrees, while Behrampore also stayed below the 12-degree mark.

These conditions follow the slight dip seen on Tuesday, when Kolkata recorded 15.2 degrees Celsius. On that day, Cooch Behar had already shown signs of sharper cooling at 10.2 degrees Celsius, while Darjeeling touched 5.6 degrees Celsius. In South Bengal, Kalyani dropped to 11.5 degrees, and places like Behrampore, Bolpur, and Bardhaman saw temperatures fall below 12 degrees.

The cold trend became noticeable from Monday, when Kolkata had logged 15 degrees Celsius, while Bolpur was the coldest in the plains at 10 degrees Celsius. Darjeeling recorded 6.2 degrees Celsius, marking the start of the weeklong cold stability.

Meteorologists predict that this cold phase will continue for at least 7 to 8 more days, with little chance of any significant rise in temperature. Instead, the mercury may fall further by 1 to 1.5 degrees, extending the early-winter chill across Bengal.
