Rain Eases in West Bengal, Gradual Rise in Temperature Expected

After an unusually prolonged wet spell across both southern and northern parts of West Bengal, weather conditions are now set to turn drier over the coming days, paving the way for a gradual return of summer-like warmth.

The recent spell of rain brought much-needed relief from rising temperatures, effectively delaying typical summer conditions across the state. Notably, Kolkata witnessed a rare meteorological event—continuous Nor’wester activity over four consecutive days from Sunday to Wednesday. Light rain was also recorded on Thursday morning, extending the wet phase further. Such a sustained sequence of Nor’westers in April has not been observed since 2013, making this spell particularly significant.

Meteorologists attribute this extended period of rainfall and thunderstorms to a combination of strong western disturbances interacting with cyclonic circulation over the region. These systems created favorable conditions for repeated storm development, leading to widespread rainfall across districts.

However, these weather systems have now weakened considerably. As a result, rainfall activity is expected to reduce sharply, and dry conditions will begin to dominate across the state.

With the skies clearing, temperatures are likely to rise steadily. In Kolkata and adjoining areas, daytime temperatures may climb to around 36°C over the next few days. In the western districts of the state, temperatures could rise further, touching approximately 38°C.

Despite the increase, weather officials indicate that heatwave conditions are unlikely in the immediate future. The rise in temperature is expected to remain within typical seasonal levels for April, without crossing extreme thresholds.

Overall, West Bengal is transitioning from an extended pre-monsoon wet phase to a more stable and warmer weather pattern, marking the gradual onset of summer conditions across the region.
