The United States has warned Iran of serious consequences if it proceeds with the execution of protesters arrested during the ongoing anti-government demonstrations. Former US President Donald Trump said Washington would take “very strong action” if Iranian authorities carry out hangings of those detained during the unrest.
Speaking in an interview, Trump said he was not certain whether executions had already begun, but stressed that any such move by Iran would invite a strong response from the US. He did not specify what form such action might take.
Trump also urged people in Iran to continue protesting against the country’s leadership, repeatedly criticising the ruling system headed by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He suggested that international pressure on Tehran was increasing.
The warning comes amid reports from human rights organisations that Iranian security forces have used lethal force to suppress protests, leading to a significant number of deaths. There are also concerns that some detainees may face capital punishment under Iran’s legal framework.
Several European countries have expressed concern over the crackdown and have called on Iran to halt executions and respect the rights of protesters. The developments have further strained relations between United States and Iran, which remain tense over a range of political and security issues.
