US forces carried out large-scale retaliatory airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, escalating military action against the extremist group’s remaining networks in the region. The strikes were conducted after a recent attack linked to the group that resulted in the deaths of US personnel and injured several others.
According to US officials, the operation targeted multiple Islamic State positions across central and eastern parts of Syria. The strikes focused on command centres, weapons storage facilities, logistics hubs and hideouts used by militants. Military aircraft and precision-guided munitions were used to hit several dozen targets in a coordinated operation aimed at degrading the group’s operational capabilities.
The US defence establishment said the action was intended as a direct response to the attack on American forces and to prevent further threats against US troops and allied personnel deployed in Syria. Officials emphasised that the strikes were limited in scope and focused solely on Islamic State infrastructure, not on Syrian government forces or civilians.
American leaders reiterated that the United States would continue to act decisively against Islamic State elements wherever they pose a threat. They also stated that the presence of US troops in Syria remains focused on counterterrorism operations and supporting local partners in preventing the resurgence of the extremist organisation.
The Islamic State, though territorially defeated in Syria and Iraq, continues to operate through sleeper cells and sporadic attacks. Security analysts say the latest strikes underline Washington’s intent to maintain military pressure on the group and signal that attacks on US forces will be met with swift retaliation.
There was no immediate independent confirmation of casualties from the airstrikes, and the situation on the ground remained tense as regional actors closely monitored developments following the US military action.
