Coal India Ltd (CIL) recorded a 3.7% decline in coal production during April–November 2024, producing 453.5 million tonnes (MT) compared with 471 MT in the same period last year. The drop comes despite government efforts to boost domestic production and reduce import dependence.
However, CIL’s output improved marginally in November, rising 1.2% to 68 MT from 67.2 MT a year earlier.
In FY24-25, the company produced 781.1 MT of coal—about 7% below its annual target of 838 MT. For FY25-26, CIL is aiming for 875 MT of production and 900 MT of offtake. The company had earlier expressed confidence in achieving the 875 MT target this fiscal.
CIL missed its monthly production targets in both September and October. Output dropped 9.8% to 56.4 MT in October, while September production fell to 48.97 MT.
