South Bengal To Enter Strong Winter Phase From December 4, Western Districts May See Sub-10°C

South Bengal is preparing for a decisive shift in weather as a fresh and stronger spell of winter is expected to set in from December 4. This comes after a brief period of warmer-than-normal conditions caused by the cloud cover and atmospheric changes induced by Cyclone Ditwah. As the system moves away and the cloud bands disperse, clear skies and dry continental winds from the northwest are expected to dominate, restoring authentic winter characteristics.

Over the next few days up to December 3, temperatures will remain somewhat higher than expected for this time of year. However, from December 4 onward, a sharp drop in temperature is likely, marking the true onset of winter’s second and more intense phase.

The most dramatic effects will be felt in South Bengal’s western districts. Locations such as Purulia, Santiniketan (Bolpur), Bankura, Jhargram, and parts of West Midnapore and Birbhum are expected to record minimum temperatures below 10°C. This would be the first time this season that these regions dip into single-digit territory, particularly during the early morning hours.

Kolkata, on the other hand, is likely to see its minimum temperature fall below 15°C, bringing noticeably cooler nights and crisp mornings. The city may not touch the extreme lows of the western plateau districts, but a distinct winter feel will finally be in place.

As winds shift, the air will become drier, and foggy or misty mornings may appear in some inland areas, especially near river basins and low-lying zones. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain comfortable, with mild sunshine and pleasant afternoons, followed by colder evenings.

This upcoming cooling phase signals the true entry of winter in South Bengal and is expected to hold for several days, possibly deepening further as December progresses.
