14 Children Lose Vision in Madhya Pradesh After Playing with ‘Carbide Guns’ on Diwali

Fourteen children in Madhya Pradesh have lost their eyesight after playing with homemade “carbide guns” during Diwali celebrations. The incidents occurred over the festive weekend across several districts, with Vidisha emerging as the worst affected.

According to hospital authorities, more than 120 children were admitted across the state with severe eye injuries caused by the explosion of these devices. The crude guns, made using calcium carbide and water, create a loud blast similar to a firecracker — but the explosion is powerful enough to cause permanent eye damage.

Doctors at major hospitals, including Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, said the injuries were severe, with many children suffering ruptured eyeballs, retinal burns, and embedded metal fragments. For several victims, the loss of vision is irreversible.

Despite a state-wide ban on carbide guns issued on October 18, local shops in parts of Vidisha and nearby towns continued to sell them as festive toys. Police have arrested six people in connection with the illegal sale and distribution of these dangerous items.

Officials believe social media videos showing the use of carbide guns may have contributed to the spread of the trend, as children tried to imitate what they saw online.

Authorities have urged parents to stay vigilant and keep children away from such devices. Health experts have also called for stronger awareness campaigns to prevent similar tragedies during future festivals.
