Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with US President Donald Trump to congratulate him on the successful first phase of efforts to establish peace in the Gaza region.
According to official sources, the two leaders also discussed ongoing India–US trade talks and reviewed the progress made in recent months. Modi expressed hope that both countries would continue to maintain close coordination in the coming weeks to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said, “I spoke with my friend President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic peace initiative in Gaza. We also reviewed the positive progress made in our trade discussions.”
The phone conversation comes amid global attention on the Gaza ceasefire plan, which has been accepted by both Israel and Hamas following mediation efforts led by the United States. Under the initial phase of the agreement, certain Israeli troops will withdraw from parts of Gaza, while Hamas is expected to release a number of Israeli hostages.
Diplomatic observers view Modi’s gesture as a significant expression of support for Washington’s peace initiative in West Asia, especially at a time when India continues to pursue a balanced foreign policy between its long-standing ties with Israel and its relations with Arab nations.
Earlier in the day, Modi also extended his congratulations to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the progress of the peace accord. Reports suggest that Netanyahu briefly paused a cabinet meeting to take the Indian Prime Minister’s call.
The discussions between Modi and Trump are seen as part of India’s continued engagement with key global stakeholders amid shifting geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
