Rivers Change Course: Tabakoshi Among Worst-Hit in Darjeeling Disaster

The small hamlet of Tabakoshi near Mirik, has been among the worst-affected regions following the recent spell of torrential rain and landslides that hit the Darjeeling hills. Situated along the banks of the Rangbhang River, this quiet valley — known for its tea gardens and natural beauty — has suffered extensive damage.

The river has changed its course, sweeping through farmlands, homes, and homestays. Several houses have been damaged, and families displaced as water and debris surged through the valley. The area, which once attracted travellers for its calm surroundings and community-based tourism, now faces a long road to recovery.

Relief and rescue operations are underway. Officials from the District Administration, along with GTA Sabha Chairman Anjul Chouhan, local sabhasad Noble Bomzon, and members of the VikRun Foundation, visited the affected zones on Wednesday to assess the situation. Local organisations, including Youth for Tourism, have joined the efforts to provide relief materials and assistance to affected residents.

Authorities have assured that steps are being taken to restore connectivity and normal life in the area. Roads connecting Mirik and nearby villages have been partially cleared, though access remains difficult in several stretches. Local volunteers are working to reach families stranded in isolated locations.

Once known for its scenic tea gardens and riverside homestays, Tabakoshi now faces a period of rebuilding and recovery. The local community continues to show resilience, with coordinated relief efforts offering hope for the gradual return of stability and livelihood in the valley.
