A fresh Western Disturbance is set to impact northwest India between 5 and 7 October, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds in the plains, and the season’s first spells of snow in parts of the western Himalayas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several states. The tourists are also advised to exercise caution during this period.
Rain and Thunderstorms in the Plains
The disturbance will trigger light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh–Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, and northern Rajasthan, with peak activity expected on 6 October, when very heavy rainfall is also likely. Gusty winds of 30–50 km/h are also likely during thunderstorms, potentially causing waterlogging and traffic delays in urban areas.
Snowfall in the Western Himalayas
Higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to receive light to moderate snowfall, with isolated heavy snow likely in parts of Lahaul and Spiti (HP) on 6 October. In Uttarakhand, snowfall is predicted above 4,000 metres during 6–7 October. Jammu & Kashmir may witness the first snowfall of the season in some upper regions.
Authorities have cautioned that slippery roads, slushy conditions at high passes, and local avalanches or rockfalls are possible due to the snow and rain mix. Some high-altitude routes could face temporary closures or travel disruptions.
Tourist and Traveller Advisory
For this inclement weather, the tourists are advised to exercise caution and follow these steps:
- Check local forecasts and advisories before planning treks or day trips.
- Start early and build in buffer time for road or flight delays.
- Carry waterproof gear, warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and for high-altitude treks, microspikes and trekking poles.
- Avoid night driving in hilly terrain, especially near high passes where black ice and slush can form.
- Do not attempt closed or unofficial mountain routes, and avoid camping in narrow valleys or riverbeds during rainfall spells
Why This System Matters
This is one of the first active Western Disturbances of the post-monsoon season, bringing a change in wind patterns and setting the stage for early winter conditions in parts of north India. For tourists heading to Himalayan destinations during the festive season, it signals the beginning of snowfall risk alongside pleasant weather in the plains.
