Just when the city of Kolkata was basking in the joy of a less-rain Durga Puja, the Bay of Bengal is preparing a surprise for the final day of celebrations. A fresh depression has formed over the east-central Bay and is likely to intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 hours, setting the stage for a soggy Dashami in parts of southern Bengal.
The weather system is expected to move north-northwestwards towards the Odisha coast, drawing in moisture-laden winds and triggering spells of moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of South Bengal. Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and parts of Bankura and Purulia are likely to see on-and-off rain from Thursday onwards.
For puja revellers, who enjoyed an unusually dry festive spell this year, this change in weather comes just as the idols are set to be immersed. “Intermittent showers are expected during Dashami, though the rain may not be continuous. Some spells could be intense,” a Met official said. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea as wind speeds are likely to increase along the Odisha–West Bengal coast. Coastal areas may experience rough sea conditions over the next few days.
City authorities have urged Puja committees and local bodies to be alert, especially with large processions and immersion events planned. Localized waterlogging and traffic disruptions cannot be ruled out during heavy spells.
After four days of almost clear skies and vibrant celebrations, it seems the Bay has saved its downpour for the grand finale.
