Coal India Raises Ex Gratia for Fatal Mine Accidents to ₹25 Lakh, Enhances Insurance Cover

New Delhi: State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) has increased the ex gratia payment for fatal mine accidents to ₹25 lakh, up from ₹15 lakh earlier, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy announced on Friday. The revised compensation will take effect from September 17, coinciding with Vishwakarma Diwas.

Enhanced Insurance Benefits

  • Families of CIL employees will now receive ₹25 lakh ex gratia in case of fatal mine accidents.
  • The company will provide accidental insurance of ₹1 crore for employees.
  • For contractual workers, the accidental insurance cover has been fixed at ₹40 lakh.

Calling the move a “historic step”, Reddy said it reflects the government’s and CIL’s commitment to worker welfare. The announcement was made in the presence of P M Prasad, Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India.

Focus on Reducing Import Dependence

Reddy further underlined the government’s efforts to reduce reliance on imported coal, noting that India saved ₹60,000 crore in the last fiscal year through greater domestic production.

He also highlighted the launch of a ₹32,000 crore National Critical Mineral Mission, aimed at boosting exploration and securing key resources essential for the energy transition. The mission has already begun work in countries such as Argentina and Zambia, with participation from both public and private players.
