Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, is set to establish a new integrated aluminium manufacturing facility in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, with a proposed investment of ₹586 crore, according to reports. The plant will supply aluminium for the production of Apple’s iPhone chassis, a critical component in the smartphone’s design.
The proposal is scheduled to be reviewed today by the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB). If approved, the project will be implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Electronics Component Manufacturing Policy 2025–30. Operations are expected to begin by March 2027, creating over 600 direct and indirect jobs within the next four years.
Apple Supply Chain Push in Andhra Pradesh
The new facility is set to integrate Andhra Pradesh into Apple’s global supply chain for the first time. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been vocal about his ambition to build a comprehensive iPhone manufacturing ecosystem in the state, capitalizing on India’s growing role as an alternative production hub outside China.
The strategic location of Kuppam adds to the project’s significance, lying just 120 kilometres from Bengaluru’s Devanahalli, where Foxconn – Apple’s largest contract manufacturer – inaugurated its second-biggest plant outside China earlier this month.
Hindalco’s Expansion Strategy
At Hindalco’s 66th Annual General Meeting, Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla highlighted the company’s long-term strategy to reinforce both its upstream and downstream businesses. The company has already been expanding its capacity in aluminium and copper smelting, and the upcoming Kuppam plant represents a push towards accelerated upstream expansion while supporting downstream value-added growth.
