23 Killed in Goa Nightclub Fire; CM Pramod Sawant Orders Inquiry

A massive fire at a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, killed at least 23 people and injured around 50 others early on Sunday. The blaze broke out at “Birch by Romeo Lane” around 1 am, with a suspected gas-cylinder explosion believed to have triggered the rapidly spreading flames.

Most of the deceased were staff members, while a few tourists were also among the victims. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, and authorities have begun the identification process. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Fire and police teams reached the scene quickly and brought the situation under control. Investigators are examining whether the club complied with fire-safety rules, including the handling of gas cylinders and the availability of emergency exits. The establishment has been sealed, and its management is being questioned.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep grief over the tragedy and stated on X:
“Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people. I visited the incident site and have ordered an inquiry into this incident. Those found responsible will face the most stringent action under the law — any negligence will be dealt with firmly.”

The incident has triggered renewed concern about safety standards at nightlife venues in the state, especially during the busy tourist season. Authorities are expected to conduct wider inspections of similar establishments in the coming days.
